Two-factor Authentication Offers Additional Security Measures when Logging on to CertCenter, Completely Free of Charge

Two-factor authentication has finally arrived, and we are now able to offer to our clients – by means of Symantec Validation and the ID Protection Service – a higher level of security when logging on to our Extranet.

Intricate attacks on online services have shown that a simple password prompt will no longer provide the level of security needed to prevent unauthorized access to an organization’s internal network and applications.

The consequences of unauthorized access to an organization’s sensitive data may prove costly: non-compliance with legal regulations, fines, and the loss of customer trust. Symantec™ Validation and ID Protection Service (VIP) (formerly VeriSign® Identity Protection Authentication Service) offers an enhanced level of authentication by means of a secure, cloud-based service. An organization’s capability to protect legitimate access to its networks and applications while preventing malignant attacks, will increase dramatically.

How does Symantec VIP work?

symantec_vipSymantec™ Validation and ID Protection Service (VIP) offers a cloud-based, secure, two-factor authentication process via a combination of something that you know (e.g. username and password), and something that you own (a reference in form of a card, a token, or a cell phone). VIP protects networks, applications, and data from unauthorized access by means of comprehensive data protection software, which employs one-time passwords (OTP).

How do I generate a One-Time Password (OTP)?

There are free apps for common cell phones (e.g. iPhone and Android), clients for Microsoft Windows and Apple Mac OS X, as well as fee-based hardware security cards/tokens (available for 20€, not including shipping).

Because your credentials are identity-based, you can use these credentials not only at CertCenter, but also when logging into PayPal or eBay (further information at: PayPal and eBay both employ VIP technology by Symantec™.

What are the costs related to the use of the two-factor authentication?

We at CertCenter recommend the use of the two-factor authentication, which is completely free of charge for our customers and partners.
